While it’s way-too-early to predict the 2021 NFL Draft, there is a strong belief that Trevor Lawrence will be the number one overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
During his two years as the Clemson starting quarterback, Lawrence has never missed a game as a Tiger, after taking over previous starting quarterback, Kelly Bryant’s spot. Lawrence has also never lost a game as the starting quarterback of the Tigers, until recently against Joe Burrow’s LSU Tigers.
However, to predict the 6’ 6”, 220 pound quarterback’s potential, we need to go back in time to what Lawrence did at Cartersville High School, in the state of Georgia. When Lawrence arrived at Cartersville, he led the Purple Hurricanes to a 52-2 record, including 2 state championships. While leading the Purple Hurricanes, he also broke Deshaun Watson’s previous state record in passing yards and touchdowns. Lawrence was also a finalist in the “Elite 11” show, where he fell short to Hawaii native, and recently the number 5 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Tua Tagovailoa. As a 5-star recruit and being regarded as one of the best recruits in history, Lawrence evidently went on to continue his athletic journey as a Clemson Tiger.
As a Tiger, Lawrence holds a 25-1 record when being the starter under center. Also, Lawrence has led the Tigers to two national championship games and won one out of the two. Lawrence has won many awards, other than the Heisman, but much speculation resides around Lawrence’s arm. In the 2019-20 season, the Tigers involved Lawrence much more in their run game, which seemed to work well, and bring out a side in his game that wasn’t clearly evident. His rushing attempts nearly doubled, and his yards went from 177 in 2018-2020 to 563 in 2019-2020. However, his amount of interceptions also doubled from 4 in 2018-2019 to 8 in 2019-2020. He also missed many targets at crucial times in the national championship game.
However, the case for tanking for Trevor Lawrence is in his competitiveness and willingness to win. As a starter, he has only lost one game in his two years at Clemson. In a modern-day NFL, where quarterbacks have to be able to throw and run the ball, Lawrence fits well into the mold. Last season, Lawrence showed his ability to move the ball downfield with his legs. He has always been able sling the ball, and he has the physical attributes of a franchise quarterback in the NFL, but who?
There are a few teams in the mix for a franchise quarterback.
- New England Patriots
-With the perfect tanking schedule, and without Tom Brady under center anymore in Foxboro, Trevor Lawrence could be wearing the red, white, and blue, under the lead of Hall of Fame coach, Bill Belicheck.
- Oakland Raiders
-As a struggling franchise, the Oakland Raiders are in desperate need of a guy under center. With Derek Carr in the hot seat this season, if he doesn’t fulfill his job as the starting quarterback of the Raiders, the Raiders could very-much-so move on from him.
- Atlanta Falcons
-With Matt Ryan always having rollercoaster seasons, and coming to the end of his career, the Falcons could very much look for the future of their franchise. If Matt Ryan and cast, do not live up to expectation, expect the Falcons to reach for their next star in Trevor Lawrence.
